Is The Bible Relevant For Today?

How important is Bible study to the average person? What does the Bible mean to most Christians? Most Christians have a Bible and even many non-Christians have a Bible in their home. How often does a Christian read or study the Bible? I wonder if Christians truly believe that God wrote the Bible. Do Christians take Bible truth seriously by living according to all that it states? If the Bible was truly written by God then you would think that All Christians would want to live by a standard that came from a perfect being. I would expect non-Christians to live by their own code of life but you would think that Christians would live by the words of their God that save them and gave them eternal life in heaven.

Is the Bible a book that Christians hold dear to themselves hanging on every word or a book that provides suggestions for particular problems one may be having? How often does someone use a Bible commentary to better understand the Bible showing to God that the Bible is something that holds value to him or her? Is the Bible a book that holds ALL of the answers to life? Do Christians have the right to call themselves Christians and live contrary to the Bible? Some may consider the book as a guide to life picking and choosing what they want to live by. Wouldn’t that make them a god to themselves?

What if the Bible is the very Word of God and God requires all who are in His family to live by every principle and even by every word written. Bible study would be very important to the one who treasures God. Do we really love God or are we just people who want to be like everybody else? Maybe we just don’t like the way the world does things or how the world looks and we just want to be in another category? Maybe many people who call themselves Christians are just masquerading as a Christian because Bible truth is not important. The world is becoming way too evil and people who want to be good for the most part are looking for a new life that they can call good. A good Bible commentary would help us to understand the standards that God requires for mankind to be like.

Many so-called Christians will not make a total commitment to Christ and His Word because the way is very extreme from the life in the world system. Are we as Christians to take the wisdom of the Bible when it comes to the right living?

If the Bible were not actually important to you then maybe it would be a good idea to just get rid of it and be who you really are. At least if your honest before God maybe you’ll have a chance to be saved instead of just pretending that you are a Christian.

I think God wants a real family who truly loves Him and obeys what He says. If you really have an appreciation for God and all He has done for you then you would automatically return your love towards God and not think of yourself but think about what God wants. The Bible is the standard for a true Christian and the ones who are really saved by the blood of Christ have an uncompressing devotion to live by every word written in this holy book and the rest of mankind are lost or are just masquerading as Christians. Maybe we need a campaign to get the so-called Christians saved starting with many of the Pastors in our churches. Put the Bible on the shelf of your heart!

The Bible is still counted amongst the largest sellers of published books.

Given here are some more interesting Bible facts.

One of the most famous books in the world, the Bible is a collection of writings, comprising of the Old and New Testaments, which are considered sacred by the Jewish and the Christian re

ligions. The books that are regarded to be a part of the collection of holy scriptures vary according to the historic tradition that defines or uses it. Given below are a few interesting Bible facts.

The word ‘Bible’ has been derived from the Latin word ‘biblia’, which means ‘books’.

The Christian Bible includes the scriptures of the Hebrews, known as the Old Testament, along with later writings, referred to as the New Testament. Some Christian groups also include the biblical apocrypha or the deuterocanonical books as part of either the Old or the New Testaments.

The Christians regard the collection of religious writings before the life of Jesus Christ as the Old Testament, which is also referred to as the Jewish Bible, or the Hebrew Bible, or the Hebrew Scriptures. The Hebrew Bible in Hebrew is known as ‘Tanakh’.

The terms ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Testaments are only recognized by the Christians, as only the Hebrew Bible, or the so-called Old Testament, is recognized by the followers of Judaism.

Thus, the terms ‘Old’ and ‘New’ have two meanings: 1) A chronological one, since the Old Testament predates the New Testament; and 2) A theological one, which implies that the Old Testament is supposed to be replaced by the New Testament.

In fact, the terms ‘Old Testament’ and ‘New Testament’ appear to have been incorporated after 200 A.D.

Comprising of 39 books, without counting the Apocrypha, the Old Testaments was written in Hebrew originally.

The books that make up the Old Testament are: Genesis; Exodus; Leviticus Numbers; Deuteronomy; Joshua; Judges; Ruth; 1 & 2 Samuel; 1 & 2 Kings; 1 & 2 Chronicles; Ezra; Nehemiah; Esther; Job; Psalms; Proverbs; Ecclesiastes; Song of Songs; Isaiah; Jeremiah; Lamentations; Ezekiel; Daniel; Hosea; Joel; Amos; Obadiah; Jonah; Micah; Nahum; Habakkuk; Zephaniah; Haggai; Zechariah; and Malachi.

Amongst these, the first five are referred to as the Torah, or the Pentateuch, or the Five Books of Moses. Traditionally, they are thought to have been authored by Moses, although modern scholars think that they may have been written by 4-5 authors. The only book amongst these where the word ‘God’ is not mentioned is the book of Esther.

Apart from the Hebrew Scripture, the Bible that most Christians use comprises of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, along with the Apostle Paul’s letters and also the writings of other disciples, as well as the early church along with the Book of Revelation.

Written originally in Greek, although some people argue that it was written in Aramaic first, the New Testament comprises of 27 books, which are: Matthew; Mark; Luke; John; Acts; Romans; 1 & 2 Corinthians; Galatians; Ephesians; Philippians; Colossians; 1 & 2 Thessalonians; 1 & 2 Timothy; Titus; Philemon; Hebrews; James; 1 & 2 Peter; 1, 2 & 3 John; Jude; and Revelation.

It is said that about 40 people wrote the Bible, starting from about 1450 B.C. to about 100 A.D.

The Bible is made up of several genres of literature such as myth, poetry, prophecy, narrative, letters, and sermonic literature.

The Bible was first translated into English by John Wycliffe, in 1382 A.D.

The first book that was printed was the Bible, in 1454 A.D. This was accomplished by Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the ‘type mold’ used in the printing press.

The Bible, since then, has been translated into more than 2000 languages, and continues to be the largest seller amongst published books.

Did you ever wonder why the Bible is so hard to read? It’s simple really. God is looking for people who are willing to pursue Him. The Bible is like a gold mine. Now, if I were to give you a real live gold mine, would you just walk in and pick up the gold? No, of course not. You have to dig for it, but the reward is incredibly valuable. I promise if you dig into the Bible you’ll find secrets FAR more valuable than just gold.

The other thing the Bible is like is a jigsaw puzzle. It’s not until you complete it that you really start to grasp the whole picture. I encourage you most strongly to make a decision to read the whole Bible.

1.) Get A Version You Can Understand. The Living Bible is the easiest to read, but it is a paraphrase, not a translation. This means that the translators tried to translate the meaning of the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, not the exact words. The New American Standard Version (NASB) is generally accepted as the most accurate modern translation. It was translated with the benefit of the findings of the Dead Sea Scrolls (1946) and the storeroom of Ezra (Egypt, 1872) which were not available in earlier English translations. It is still somewhat difficult to read, however. The New International Version (NIV) is another painstakingly accurate modern translations, but it is very readable. It too is highly recommended. The King James Version and The Catholic Bible are the classic American Bibles, but they can be very difficult to read. If you are a member of a church, your Pastor or Priest may have a specific version that they recommend.

2.) Every Time Before You Read: Ask God to open your eyes and your heart to His Word.

3.) This Is The Order In Which To Read The Bible: The Bible is broken into two parts: The Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the history of creation and the Jewish nation, along with stories, writings and warnings from God’s prophets. The New Testament is the story of Jesus and the early Christian church along with instructions on how to be a Christian. We live under the New Testament - which is a new way of life which God set up through Jesus. The first 4 books of the New Testament are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and are known as "The Gospels." (This means "Good News"). These are 4 different versions of the same story - The Life of Jesus. They are 4 eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life. So read in this order:Matthew, Romans, 1&2 Corinthians Mark, Acts, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians Luke, 1&2 Thessalonians, 1&2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James John, 1&2 Peter, 1,2&3 John, Jude, Revelation

4.) Read One Chapter At A Time. This will take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes.

5. ) You Will Need The Following Tools: A pencil and a ruler.

6.) This Is How You Use The Pencil And Ruler: When you read, underline anything that strikes you as important or interesting. When you finish the chapter, look back over the things you’ve underlined and draw a box round the most important thing in the chapter. When you finish a book, review your boxed verses and make a double box around the most important verse of the book. Doing this is simply a tool to help you realize what you’re reading. You will get much more out of reading the Bible this way.

7.) When You Finish The New Testament, START OVER - you will be amazed at how God’s Word is new & fresh every time you read it.

8.) After You Have Read The New Testament, Then You Can Add The Old Testament. Read the Old Testament in the order in which it appears in the Bible. To read the whole Bible in a year, you’ll need to read 1 chapter of the New Testament and 5-7 pages of the Old Testament. Here’s the way to know the number of pages you’ll need to read: Take the total number of pages in the Old Testament and divide by 200. Let’s say the result is 5. Your goal will be to read 5 pages of the Old Testament 20 times a month for 10 months. Aim for everyday, but 20 times is the monthly must-have goal. This gives you 2 months of extra built-in leeway and 10 days leeway per month. If you get bogged down reading the Old Testament, turn to Psalms and Proverbs. But never give up reading the New Testament for the sake of reading the Old Testament.

9.) The Best Thing You Can Ever Do For Your spiritual Life Is To Read The Whole Bible EVERY Year.

WHY should you do this? Because it is where faith comes from. "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ." Romans 10:17And how important is faith? This is what the Bible says: "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Galatians 5:6In Conclusion: This plan will effectively help you to read through the Bible. You will find that the Bible is "alive." You will be reading along and - BAM! - something will jump off the page at you, like it was written ONLY for you for this EXACT moment of your life. It is AMAZING and it will happen over and over. It is no wonder that millions of lives have been changed by the Bible and that a surprising number of people have even given their lives so that you might have the right and the ability to read it.

How to use the Bible Effectively in Sunday School

The Bible is the word of God and is the foundation of the Christian walk. Teaching the Bible is Sunday school is vital. This article shows you how to use the Bible effectively.

The sole purpose of Sunday school is to teach children and young people about God, His Word and His will for their lives. As they study the Bible they learn about creation, how sin entered the world, why we need a Saviour, how God sent his only Son to redeem us etc.

The Bible tells us what is right and what is wrong. The right way to go and what happens if we go the wrong way. It gives examples of people who did what was right in God’s eyes and those who did not follow God’s leading. Most importantly it shows us Jesus Christ and the Way of Salvation that is available through Him.

It is important for all persons of all ages to read their Bible and then to come together with others of similar age and interest to really study God’s Word in Sunday school.

The most effective use of the Bible starts with the teacher. They must make the Bible central to their own life, study it, read it daily, memorise it and consult it often. Children and young people should be able to see this love of the Bible and how important it is to the teacher, in the life of the teacher.

At each lesson, the Bible should be the primary book used. It should be referred to often as the lesson is taught. It is the teachers responsibility to signpost the children and young people to their Bibles so they to can learn to find answers and information for themselves.

The Bible can often be conceived as a rule book to keep us from having fun. It is therefore important that you help children and young people to see the Bible as a positive book. Approach each lesson/Bible study as if you are about to discover the greatest news you have ever heard.

The Bible is not just about stories of long ago. Present it as a book that is understandable and its principles and values as very relevant for today. Use various methods to get the message across, drama, role-play, games, crafts etc.

Remember many people do not even have a basic understanding or knowledge of the Bible. So assume nothing, be careful not to look down on those who know little of God’s word. Help all children and young people to a greater understanding and appreciation of the scriptures.

Another reason the Bible can be ineffective is children can get bored with Sunday school and Bible study. So it is important to introduce them to Jesus Christ with each lesson or study group. Once they meet Jesus, and start to understand God’s love and purpose for their lives, the Bible becomes more real and more interesting for them.

Make studying the Bible interesting and relevant to the children and young people’s lives as a matter of importance. Creative Bible study material can be found in any good Christian bookshop if your current curriculum does not suggest it.

Why is the Bible important? Because it tells us of Jesus Christ, His love and His will for us, and reveals the Way of Salvation that is available through Him.

Remember the Bible is our "handbook for life." As the children and young people apply its lessons to their personal day to day living they will truly benefit from Sunday school. A bumper sticker with a picture of a Bible on it and the following words, "When all else fails, read the instruction." says it all!

Why am I Afraid of Reading the Bible?

My Bible had been collecting dust on the shelf for years. But why was I so afraid to open it?

In the past, I thought I was saved. I prayed and read the Bible occasionally and attended Church. I was baptized when I was a child because the Bible says that all new believers must do so. I even won an Oxford KJV Bible from my church for bringing the most friends with me to the Sunday service. Through my teen years I was involved with the church teen group and sang and played the guitar during the services on a regular basis.

After graduating from high school, I left those days behind. I attended Church on a non-regular basis, and didn’t follow the Christian way of living very closely at all.

Every time I would see my Bible on the table or in the bookshelf, I would be afraid to pick it up and read. I got to thinking about what if it said something that scared me because my life was so far from perfection. I didn’t want to read about what God’s thoughts were about people that didn’t follow his word. Of course if I had read it, it would have told me that I don’t need to be perfect to be saved or loved by God. Jesus died for us so we don’t have to worry about that. God forgives our sins, all we need to do is ask him.

I finally decided that I was really tired of living the way I was. So I asked the Lord to come into my heart, and for his forgiveness. I was baptized again because I felt that I really wanted to show my acceptance in God and his son Jesus this time. I started reading the Bible through a study at my Church. I started building a relationship with the Lord and it has been so comforting. He has and continues to get me through hard times and it feels so great to be able to stay in constant contact with him through prayer and through his word.

I found that the Bible is not scary at all, that God’s word is the greatest support of comfort and reassurance than anyone or anything of this material world. Now whenever I feel afraid or worried, I read the Bible especially the Psalms chapters. What a nice turn around! I am so thankful that we have the Holy Bible to read anytime we need to. Don’t be afraid to take that first step and open it, you will like what you see.

The Holy Bible Online - There Is More There Than You Might Think

With more homes all over the world now having computers in them, more people are finding out that the Holy Bible and the message that it carries can now be found online. For instance, the Holy Bible Online can now be found in audio versions that anyone can sit back and listen to. These aren’t for the hearing impaired either, and in fact, people are now finding that they like to read along while an audio bible plays for them.

Fast Growing

Online bible study sessions are another aspect of the Bible that can be found online as are numerous Christian chatrooms where like minded people can meet and share their thoughts. In fact, Christian and Bible related media is one of the fastest growing areas on the Internet as more people are finding out every day.

Bringing the Bible to More People Worldwide

The bible in its entirety, or in portions can also be downloaded by podcast and stored in an Mp3 player. So, it seems that the Holy Bible in all its variations is now becoming more and more available online with each passing day. This means that it is far more accessible to more people than it has even been before and all thanks to the Internet.

Making a Better World

Christian themed websites are also great places for anyone to visit and you don’t have to be a Christian to do so. These types of websites are one of the many driving forces and catalysts that are bridging gaps and bringing people of all faiths to the table for frank discussion on how to build better societies throughout the planet.

Fighting Hate and Pornography

The holy bible has been online since the very beginnings of the Internet, but it is only recently that it has began to be noticed to the extent that it has. With so many negative elements on the Internet such as porn and hate websites having received so much attention over the years, it is about time that people began to sit up and take notice of the Holy bible Online.

Understanding the Bible - Help for Your Bible Study
by: Karin Syren 7eb

The Bible is not always easy to understand. And we are held accountable for how we absorb it into our lives. Proverbs 4:23 makes it clear that each of us is responsible for his own heart. Consequently, many of us begin our study by reading commentaries and articles by those who we figure should know what they are talking about. These supplementary studies can be very valuable, if we adhere to a few simple rules at the outset.

First and foremost, beware of opinions presented as truths. The opinions of men can and do end up becoming the teachings of men, which then become the traditions of men and the traditions of men render the Word of no effect (Mark 7:13; Romans 4:14; Mark 7:8,9). * Begin with prayer, a good place to begin any endeavor! Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to understand (Ephesians 1:18) and your heart to receive the incorruptible Word (1 Peter 1:23). Pray for wisdom (James 1:5) to rightly divide the Scripture (2 Timothy 2:15).

* Now read everything the Bible says about the subject, or the particular Scripture you are attempting to rightly divide, by following any references to supporting Scriptures in both Old and New Testaments and using your concordance. At this point, you are filling your spirit with the Word. Do not make the mistake of being anxious about understanding all of it at this point.

* Be sure to read the passages preceding and following each Scripture to gain an awareness of the passage’s context.

* Be diligent in your word studies, using your comprehensive concordance to understand the nuances of the original Bible languages.

* Finally, formulate a statement in your own words, a paraphrase based on your study. Check and recheck to make sure you have not put your own spin on it. This exercise alone may be enough to illuminate the study for you, to open up the confusing Scripture or to provide you biblical continuity of teaching. If not, and you are looking for some supplemental teaching on the subject, continue reading.

* Now read what others have to say. Stay with teachers who consistently stand firmly on what the Word has to say and who don’t veer off into the realm of opinion, those who have shown to be careful in their study and trustworthy in their interpretations.

* Immediately discount any commentaries based on negativity or criticism of others. There may be a germ of veracity, sincerity or authenticity buried underneath, but those who resort to a negative approach pass along with it a spirit Christians do not need to embrace. Their approach will ultimately tear down any truth and sincerity they may have begun with.

* Be wary of absolute attitudes concerning areas of Scripture that are in question among trusted Bible scholars. It is necessary for each of us to remain teachable, open to the Holy Spirit giving us interpretation beyond what may have become (disputable) denominational doctrine.

* Make it a rule never to argue Scripture. The Word of God is not debatable; it is revelatory. God does not need your abilities as a disputer to bring about revelation in another. He says, for I am watching over My Word to perform it. (Jeremiah 1:12). He only needs you to speak the uncompromised Word, to say what He says - the Holy Spirit will reveal to others (Ephesians 1:17) and God will perform it (Isaiah 55:11)

Above all, do not become discouraged by any lack of understanding or by discrepancies among Bible teachers. The Word of God is meant for you and with the help of the Holy Spirit, spending time each day in the life-giving, delivering, encouraging, empowering, comforting Word of God, will lead you to understanding. Know that God has promised it will accomplish His will and He Himself will bring it to pass.

Why Read The Bible?

  by: Kelly McCausey

How easy is it for you to let dust collect on your Bible?

There was a time when I was first searching out the truth about Jesus Christ that I was embarrassed to let friends see the bible I had purchased sitting in my living room.

Then there was a season during which I was so proud to have my study bible laying open with a bookmark, highlighter and note paper nearby.

Then my bible started to just feel like an extension of my own body… always there, always ready.

Then the bible collection began… I wanted different versions, different purposes, different looks and different styles. A bible for my bedroom, a bible for the car and a bible just in case someone needs one.

And sadly… there has been a season in my life where my bible collected dust. How can that be?

Why read the Bible?

A. It shows you the right path.
B. It alerts you when you are getting off the right path.
C. It teaches you how to get back on the right path.
D. It empowers you to stay on the right path.

Isn’t that what life is all about? Finding and staying on the right path? And isn’t life always trying to get us off of the right path? The Bible is our Path Guide. We dare not let it collect dust - or worse yet, be left behind completely.

Joel Osteen and his father before him begin every service at Lakewood Church by leading the entire congregation in a simple prayer of confession and it starts like this:

"This is my Bible:
I am what it says I am;
I have what it says I have;
I can do what it says I can do."

When you open your Bible to spend some quiet time with your God - Do you believe that you are what the Bible says you are? Do you believe that you have what it says you have? Do you really believe that you can do what it says you can do?

How will you approach your Bible today?

Internet Bible Sales On The Rise For New Reasons

It is commonly accepted that the Bible is the best-selling book of all time. What may not be so well know is that in this new Internet age, the Bibles popularity has continued to grow. The newest factoid is that the Bible is the best-selling book every year - year after year.

Back in 2005 a rough estimate set the number of Bibles sold at around twenty-five million copies. That was just in the United States! Back then the amount spent on Bibles sales was estimated to be more than half a billion dollars per year. The American Bible Society distributed over 60 million Bibles last year in the U.S. alone. The Gideon’s distributed 59,460,000 Bibles worldwide last year. This is an average of over one million Gideon Bibles every week, or about 113 per minute. One publisher has 350 different editions of the Bible in print this season alone.

A recent pole indicated that roughly 92 percent of Americans own at least one Bible, and the average household has three. Two-thirds say it holds the answers to the basic questions of life. This survey also indicated that half of Americans say they read their Bibles at least once a month.

Google’s Trends data reveals that over the past four years there has been a steady decline in Internet searches for Bibles but the sales statistics continue to grow. Why is this so? Well although there are fewer people searching for Bibles, they are usually buying Bibles in larger quantities for Churches and Christian camps and organisations. James Mindor of House of Worship Bible Supply says that he has seen a moderate increase in sales over the past three years but he doesn’t doubt that sales are up overall. "There are just so many more business’ on the Internet selling Bibles and religious literature that it is getting more and more difficult to retain market share." Says James Mindor.

This Internet competition is also a contributor to the increase in sales of the Holy Bible. With more and different interpretations being published every year, owning the latest and greatest version of the Bible has created a mini fashion revolution in some religious circles. Adding to this, the ease of buying Holy Scriptures over the Internet makes traditional Bibles stores a little more than worried. James Mindor again: "The fact that we are an Internet only business saves everyone time and money. Our customers can read passages online and even see type face samples before they buy."

This modern access to the Bible goes far beyond simply seeing type face examples and cover color choices… Now anywhere in the world, with an Internet connection and a credit card, you can now have the Holy Bible delivered to you door.

Children’s Versions Of The Audio Bible.

Children have been likened to sponges, in that when they are very young they are able to learn and pick up, or soak up, a huge amount of information. If you want to make a lasting impression on your chidren it makes sense to introduce your children to Bible stories early on. TOne easy way to do that is to offer your children a vele has created an he audio Bibrsion of the Bible that they can listen to long before they enter school and learn how to read, which is called the audio Bible. Kid’s Bibles are available as Children’s Bible Stories on audio CD, and in audio Bible mp3 format.

For children who are predominantly auditory learners, who learn by hearing, an audio Bible is the way to go to share God’s Word with them. These great children’s versions of the Bible come in easy to understand language that reflects the Bible stories accurately, but in a way that children can understand.

Kids can listen to the audio Bible from home computers with speaker systems, or in other playback devices, such as DVD or CD players. You can get children’s Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments on an easy to play audio CD, along with great songs for them to sing along with.

Children’s versions of the Bible and Bible stories and songs are also available in mp3 format as well. You can even find digital audio files of the children’s Bible available on the Internet in the form of podcasts. What this means is that for a small subscription fee, you can have daily programs of presentations of the children’s audio bible sent directly to your home personal computer, where you children can listen to them.

These wonderful podcasts can also be downloaded onto an mp3 player and listened to anytime your child has time. Children have busy lives, with school, sports, arts, and other activities, so finding time for one more activity, even a beneficial one, can be difficult. With a podcast of children’s Bible stories downloaded onto a tiny mp3 player, however, bringing the Word of God into your child’s life has now gotten much simpler. The easily portable mp3 version can go with your child everywhere he or she does, and can be listened to anytime your child has a free moment in his or her busy schedule.

It takes a while for a child to mature enough so that he or she is ready to be taught to read. For many years the Bible was only available in a written form, but now through the miracle of digital technology, the audio Bible is available for you and your children to listen to, and grow in the grace of God as a result.

The Common Man And The Bible

There is no question each person is unique. We all have different fingerprints, personalities, aptitudes and abilities. But does that uniqueness mean we are all … uncommon? Jesus addressed this. You may find His view … interesting.

When the scribes and Pharisees challenged Jesus about His disciples eating with unclean hands, this was part of His response. "There is nothing outside the man which, going into him, can defile him; But the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man" (Mk 7:15). When in private, the disciples asked Jesus about this statement. He added, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed the evil thoughts and fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, envy, slander, pride (arrogance) and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man" (Mk 7:20 -23). The word we are interested in, is the one translated, "defile." The verb is koinoo, and the noun is koinos. Let’s look at the primary meaning of this word.

For centuries, many thought the New Testament was written in a "Greek from God" - holy, heavenly and undefiled by man. But archeological digs began unearthing shopping lists and land deeds written in the same Greek - in the same time period! Bible scholars soon realized the Greek of the New Testament was actually the common language of the day. It is now called Koine Greek - Common Greek - from koinoo (v) and koinos (n).

Koine Greek has many words that are neutral - morally. Context determines if they are to be understood as positive or negative. For example, Jesus told His disciples, "I have earnestly desired (epithumeo) to eat this Passover with you before I suffer" (Lk 22:15 ). But elsewhere, "everyone who looks on a woman to lust (epithumeo) for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart" (Mt 5:28 ). The first context is obviously positive, while the other clearly isn’t. Such is the case with, koinoo (v), koinos (n). In a more positive light it means, "universal, generic, widespread … common." Thus, Koine Greek. But in a negative light, this word means, "profane, inferior - defiled." Such is the context in Mark 7: 15, 20-23.

From cover to cover, the Bible teaches that our natural, universal state - our common state - is one of moral defilement. "What man is there among you, when his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give what is good to those who ask Him?" (Mt 7:9-11). To be defiled is the common state of man.

Man has his own standards for measuring one’s commonness - or uncommonness. Fame makes one uncommon. Power makes one uncommon. Wealth makes one uncommon. But a heart that exudes "evil thoughts and fornications (porneia - sexual immorality of any sort), thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, envy, slander, pride (arrogance) and foolishness" … resides in a Commoner. To some scoffing Pharisees, Jesus said, "You are those who make yourselves righteous in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men (literally, high before men) is detestable in the sight of God" (Lk 16:15 ). One’s position in life does not influence God’s assessment in this area - and that is a great encouragement. So, based upon behavior, at any given moment, God views each of us as either common … or uncommon.

It would be nice to be able to claim I live in the place of the uncommon. But this is not a position anyone occupies permanently in this lifetime. Sin - that abounding, common element - constantly pounds inside … and outside each of us. When I violate God’s measure for uncommonness, I make myself … a common man. Anyone could do what I just did. Sometimes sin deceives me, and sometimes it blinds me. But many times, I just decide to participate with it. Oftentimes, by choice, I become a Commoner.

This life is one of continual process, change - and challenge. Ultimately, God alone determines our commonness, or uncommonness, event by event. Oftentimes, we do not know how we fared (or are faring) in a given situation. But, He has given us some tools (like the first passage in this Article) - so as to substantively assess ourselves in most circumstances.

Yes, at any given moment, God views each of us as either common … or uncommon. "There is nothing outside the man which, going into him, can make him common; But, the things which proceed out of the man are what common the man …That which proceeds out of the man, that is what makes him common. For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed the evil thoughts and fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, envy, slander, pride (arrogance) and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and common the man" (Mk 7:15 , 20-23). I do not want to stay a Commoner. I want God to be able to assess me as more and more uncommon. I want to give God the opportunity to say to those around Him, "What do you think of my son, Robin? Have you seen how uncommon he is?" Do you want to remain common?
